The grassland-savanna biome encompasses a wide variety of vegetation types, from pure prairies to grass/tree or grass/shrub combinations of diverse proportions. The biome covers most of Argentina land surface.
IFEVA has a long tradition of research on this type of ecosystems, essentially focused on Patagonia and the Pampas, but often extended to other systems, both in Argentina and abroad. The major research interests are:
structural and functional heterogeneity at diverse spatial and temporal scales, which includes region, landscape and plant community distribution, species diversity, ecological succession, interspecific interactions, population dynamics, biological invasions, etc.
ecosystem functioning in terms of energy flow and cycling of major elements, and
ecosystem response to variations in both climate and disturbance regime (grazing, fire, flooding, tillage, cultivation, etc.)
